Tory MP campaigning for road safety banned after being caught speeding

A Tory MP who called for a crackdown on speeding has lost his driving licence – after being caught exceeding the speed limit.

Paul Bristow was nicked driving at 76-mph in a 50-mph zone.

It was his third speeding offence in two years.

Bristow pleaded guilty at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court.

He did not attend court.

He was given a 28-day ban.

His solicitor, Nick Diable, said the MP “had been to take his mum home, and was returning to go back to work.

“He wishes he’d paid more attention to his speed.”

Bristow must also pay a £667 fine, plus a victim surcharge of £68 and £110 court costs.

Bristow wrote in his local Peterborough newspaper that he would not be claiming mitigating circumstances.

He added:

“I need to be able to campaign about speeding on residential streets without any suggestion of hypocrisy.

“Only by asking to be disqualified can I look constituents in the eye.”

The bench heard Bristow, 42, already had six points on his licence for speeding.

Magistrate Dr David Wilkinson said:

“We note Mr Bristow pleaded guilty to the offence of speeding.

“We also note two recent speeding offences.”
