Prime Minister Boris Johnson is being urged to keep Covid-19 restrictions in place for “a few more weeks”.
The measure is “to stop us going backwords” into another lockdown.
The advice comes as latest Public Health England (PHE) figures show a 240 per cent rise in a week of the Delta variant.
PHE data shows nearly 30,000 more cases have been confirmed.
The Delta (Indian) variant is more transmissible.
Jim McManus, the vice-president of the Association of Directors of Public Health, said:
“The current restrictions should be kept going for four more weeks.
“If we invest that little bit of time to keep us going forwards, it will stop us going backwards”.
“Covid is not going to disappear on the 21st of June and lifting all measures as early as the 21st risks reversing the significant progress we have made.”
The Government hopes to lift restrictions on June 21st.
