Downtown Abbey is to return to the big screen with a new film announced in time for Christmas.
Most of the original cast – including Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Michelle Dockery and Elizabeth McGovern – will return.
The film went into production last week and is set for a December 22nd release.
The plot is not known but Oscar winning writer Julian Fellowes has been taken on the write the screenplay.
Lord Fellowes, 71, wrote the original Downtown film script.
Producer Gareth Neame said:
“After a very challenging year with so many of us separated from family and friends, it is a huge comfort to think that better times are ahead and that next Christmas we will be reunited with the much beloved characters of Downton Abbey.”
Downtown Abbey was a hugely successful television series that ran from 2010 to 2015.
It followed the up and downs of the Crawley family and their servants at the fictional estate.
