More than 80,000 people tested positive for Covid-19 on one single day.
For the last few weeks, the Government has been announcing more than 50,000 new cases a day.
But on December 29th that figure hit 80,000, revealed Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
It’s thought a Christmas backlog on counting might have caused the anomaly.
Mr Johnson said: “On 29 December, more than 80,000 people tested positive for Covid across the UK – a new record.
‘The number of deaths is up by 20 per cent over the last week and will sadly rise further.
“My thoughts are with all those who have lost loved ones.”
