A Banksy painting of chimps in the House of Commons has sold for £10 million.
It’s the highest sum ever paid for the street artist’s work.
“Devolved Parliament” went under the hammer after 13 minutes of fierce bidding at Sotheby’s in London.
The picture, painted in 2009, had a price guide of £1.5 to £2 million.
The previous best price for a Banksy was £1.4 million.
Shortly after Devolved Parliament was sold, Banksy posted on Instagram:
“Record price for a Banksy painting set at auction tonight.
“Shame I didn’t still own it.
He added: “The price of a work of art is now part of its function, its new job is to sit on the wall and get more expensive.”
His post ended with the quote:
“Laugh now, but one day no-one will be in charge.”
