An estate agent has written to a Beefeater at the Tower of London offering to buy the 11th Century building.
It is a Unesco World Heritage site.
Spike Abbott, who lives in the iconic London castle, couldn’t believe the offer from Foxtons.
He politely replied:
“Thanks for the very kind offer to sell or rent out the 12th century property that HM Tower of London provide me with, however, I think it may raise a few eyebrows when your sign appears outside my house.”
The letter is addressed to the legal owner of a home in The Casemates.
Casemates is part of the castle used for accommodation by the Beefeaters who guard the Tower of London.
Foxtons letter said:
“We are valuing property in your area next week.
“We offer a professional opinion of the sales or rental value of your property in the current market with no strings attached.”
The Tower of London was built by William the Conqueror in the 1070s and is now owned by the Queen.
A spokesperson for Foxtons told the London Evening Standard:
“We are London’s biggest estate agency and get hundreds of thousands of enquiries from people looking to buy a property.
“We’re always searching for new properties to sell to our customers.
“Sometimes, letters like this could go out as a result – we can’t check every one by hand, as we’re too busy selling and letting the genuine ones!”
