Conservative MP Sir David Amess has died after being stabbed “multiple times” at his constituency surgery.
Sir David, 69, was the MP for Southend West in Essex.
The incident happened at the Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea.
It is reported Sir David was initially treated at the scene by paramedics but later died from his injuries.
A man aged 25 has been arrested following the attack.
He is in police custody.
A knife was recovered at the scene.
Essex Police said:
“A man’s been arrested following an incident in Leigh-on-Sea.
“We were called to reports of a stabbing in Eastwood Rd North shortly after 12.05pm.
“A man was arrested shortly after and we’re not looking for anyone else.
“We’ll bring you more information when we have it.”
