Adnan Abu Walid al-Sahrawi
An ISIS leader with a £3.6 million “dead or alive” price tag on his head has been killed by French soldiers in West Africa.
It’s believed Adnan Abu Walid al-Sahrawi was “neutralised” by a special forces team supported by helicopters.
The terrorist, in his late 40s, was behind an ambush four years ago that killed four American servicemen and four Niger military people.
French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted:
“Adnan Abou Walid al-Sahrawi, leader of the terrorist group Islamic State in the Greater Sahara was neutralised by French forces.
“This is another major success in our fight against terrorist groups in the Sahel.”
The Sahel is a vast expanse of desert in Africa where terror groups roam.
An Élysée Palace spokesman later reiterated the ISIS leader “was definitely dead”.
Despite France starting to pull its troops out of the Sahel, President Macron said special forces would continue the hunt for wanted men.
Mr Macon added:
“The nation is thinking this evening of all its heroes who died for France in the Sahel, in the Serval and Barkhane operations, of the bereaved families, of all of its wounded.
“Their sacrifice is not in vain.
With our African, European, and American partners, we will continue this fight.”
In October 2019, the US State Department offered “up to $5million” for any information leading to the capture or killing of al-Sahrawi.
