Scotland Yard will not investigate BBC reporter Martin Bashir over his controversial 1995 interview with Princess Diana.

Diana’s brother Earl Spencer claimed Bashir deceived him in a bid to talk to the troubled Princess.

The journalist was accused of forging documents and misleading people to gain access to friends and family.

The BBC is holding an independent inquiry into the complaints.

The Panorama interview was a pivotal moment in the breakdown of the marriage between the late Princess and Prince Charles.

Diana famously revealed during the interview “There are three of us in this marriage…” – referring to Charles’ mistress Camilla Parker Bowles, whom he later married.

Police Commander Alex Murphy said:

“In recent months the Metropolitan Police Service received correspondence alleging unlawful activity in connection with a documentary broadcast in 1995.

“This was carefully assessed by specialist detectives.

“They obtained legal advice from Metropolitan Police lawyers, independent counsel and from the Crown Prosecution Service.

“Following this detailed assessment and in view of the advice we received, we have determined that it is not appropriate to being a criminal investigation into these allegations. No further action will be taken,” they confirmed.

“In this matter, as in any other, should any significant new evidence come to light we will assess it.”
