A third walker has been trampled to death by cows in the last three weeks.

A man in his 50s was killed while out walking with a woman in Netherton, West Yorkshire.

She remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

Last month two men were killed by cows in separate incidents in Northumberland and Richmond, North Yorkshire.

The spate of attacks has prompted the National Farmers Union (NFU) to issue guidelines for walkers.

Stuart Roberts, NFU deputy chairman, said:

“If your dog is being threatened by cows, let it go.

“Cattle will chase dogs instead of you.

“Generally, dogs will outrun cattle.”

Mr Roberts suggested walkers should slowly move away from the animals, rather than setting off at a sprint.

Last month Dave Clark, deputy head of Richmond School in North Yorkshire, died while walking his dog in a field in Richmond.

And Malcom Flynn, 72, from Carlisle, was killed on September 11 when cows charged him near Thirlwall Castle in Northumberland.

In the last 20 years 72 people – mainly farmworkers – have been killed by cattle.

In most cases involving walkers a dog was present.

It’s recommended dogs should let off their leads if walkers feel threatened by cows.
