Donald Trump’s White House is “uniquely dysfunctional” and “inept” claims Britain’s man in Washington.
The UK ambassador’s assessment of the President and his administration could prove very embarrassing for the Foreign Office.
In leaked memos it’s revealed Sir Kim Darroch questioned if the White House will “ever look competent”.
The diplomatic memos say that to make the President understand “you need to make your points simple, even blunt”.
The leaked paperwork also reveals Sir Kim’s withering appraisal of the White House.
He questioned whether it “will ever look competent”.
One stated: “We don’t really believe this administration is going to become substantially more normal; less dysfunctional; less unpredictable; less faction riven; less diplomatically clumsy and inept.”
Sir Kim said Mr Trump had been “dazzled” by the pomp and ceremony on his state visit to Britain last month
However, he wrote, despite the display “this is still the land of America First”.
Among the hoard of memos obtained by the Mail on Sunday, Sir Kim claims US policy on Iran is “incoherent, and chaotic”.
And, another said that press reports of in-fighting in the White House soon after Mr Trump’s inauguration were “mostly true”.
The Foreign Office last night dismissed the leaked memos as “mischievous behaviour”.
A spokesman said: “The British public would expect our ambassadors to provide ministers with an honest, unvarnished assessment of the politics in their country.
“Their views are not necessarily the views of ministers or indeed the Government.
“But we pay them to be candid. Just as the US ambassador here will send back his reading of Westminster politics and personalities.”
